During the mid 15th century cannons became more effective and dominant in military warfare. A medieval castle had little chance when all cannon fire would be directed to the same wall of this fortification. However in Italy the answer was found,…a fortification in the shape of a star. A so called Star Fort. The basic structure of this fortification consisted out of many tri angular bastions, which had also as purpose to cover each other. Next to that a Star Fort is more flat compared to the medieval fortification.In the late 15th century the young Dutch republic stared to build these Star Forts quite effectively against the Spanish.
Since the Italian Star Fort design would take a lot of time and money to build, the Dutch designed their own version of this fortification. This old Dutch Star Fort model, mainly consisted out of earth , which was less vulnerable against cannonballs. A second element was the permanent water ditch around the fortification. Next to that the Dutch bastions were more open of character. Around 1700 baron van Coehoorn, General of the United Dutch Republic, proposed improvements to these Star Fortifications, which led to the New Dutch Star Fort model. Star Fort fortifications served the Dutch during their “Golden Age” and beyond very well. Today you can still find these fortification in the Netherlands. Cities like Bourtange, Hulst and Naarden are good examples of star fortifications (“Vestingsteden”).
